Research Associate - Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence (2)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Director of Applied Research, the successful applicant(s) will support the college’s research and development activities in Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence.  The successful applicant(s) will be responsible to:

  • Conduct literature reviews and environmental scans to support applied research projects.
  • Design and execute industry-based applied research and development projects.
  • Collect, clean, manage, analyze, and interpret data using statistical, machine learning, and data analytics techniques.
  • Develop predictive models, algorithms, dashboards, and data visualizations to address industry and community partner challenges.
  • Support the responsible use of data and AI, including privacy, confidentiality, data governance, research ethics, and appropriate documentation of methods and results.
  • Respond to industry requests for technical services, applied research support, and data/AI-related problem solving.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, project documentation, and funding applications.
  • Manage multiple projects while meeting established timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to identify needs, scope projects, and develop new applied research initiatives.
  • Support and mentor students participating in applied research projects.
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry, government, funding agencies, academic organizations, and community partners.
  • Work with the Director of Applied Research to identify and pursue new research, partnership, and funding opportunities.
  • Represent Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓÆµat industry events, conferences, and networking activities.
  • Promote research activities and partnerships through collaboration with internal stakeholders, including Marketing and Communications and HC Programs.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics, Mathematics, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Engineering, or a closely related field. An equivalent combination of education and applied experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis, programming, machine learning, applied AI, or industry-facing analytics projects.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, SQL, or similar data analytics tools and programming languages.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, predictive modeling, statistical analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Experience developing reports, dashboards, or data visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Python visualization libraries, R, or similar platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work collaboratively with internal and external partners, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential or sensitive data in a responsible and professional manner.

Assets:

  • Experience with applied research, industry partnerships, technical service delivery, or grant/funding applications.
  • Experience mentoring students, research assistants, or junior technical staff.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, data engineering workflow's, databases, APIs, version control, or reproducible research practices.
  • Experience with generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, forecasting, simulation, optimization, or other applied AI methods.
  • Experience working with small and medium-sized enterprises, public-sector organizations, non-profits, or community partners.

These positions are grant-funded. One position is funded for a three-year term, and one is funded for a five-year term. Extensions beyond these periods are subject to continued funding.
